HOW TO BENEFIT FROM BIBLE READING
Let's pray to God for understanding.
Let my cry come near before you O Lord: give me understanding according to your word just as you opened the understanding of your disciples that I might understand the scriptures. Give me wisdom to apply the scriptures. Let my supplication come before you: deliver me according to your word. My lips shall utter your praise when you have taught me your statutes. My tongue shall speak your word for all the commandments are righteous. Open my eyes that I may behold your wondrous things out of the Bible. Make me to understand the way of your precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works. Give me knowledge, wisdom and understanding and I shall keep your law , I shall observe it with my whole heart in Jesus name I pray.
To fully understand the Bible and benefit from it, you have to know the purpose of it. In Genesis 1:1-29, we read God made the heaven and the earth and everything there is; the heavens, earth, plants, and animals were all made by God at the beginning of history. As a matter of fact, the Bible says, He spoke them into being - "And God said Let there be". In verse 26 of Geneis 1, we even read that God created us human beings in his likeness and image. In Geneis 2:1-6, we read about the finished work of God in six days and resting the seventh day. In verse 7, we read about exactly how God created man. I want you to take note of this very well. There is something I am going to teach later on. You could realized that God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. When God formed man out of the dust, it was motionless like a molded clay and therefore cannot be spoken to. This is just like a dead body. It was not until breath of life came out of God's mouth into man's nostrils that he became a living being. Now God can speak words from his mouth to that very thing that came form his mouth-the breath of life which makes one a living soul. After that God placed man whom he had formed, in the garden(Garden of Eden) that he has planted to tend and keep it. Out of the ground, the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant in the eyes and good for food. Man seeing all these trees did not know the purpose of them, so they mean nothing to him and therefore did not benefit from them. God then spoke his first words to man saying "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." In a way all of us obey the first commandment of God to man by eating, if not, all of us would have been dead pysically. If we obey one of his words by eating to live pysically, why can't we obey all his words to live spiritually."All these words I speak to you they are spirit and they are life" Jesus said. I want you to note that it is only things from the ground that benefits our body or flesh because that is where it came from. If anything has to benefit our souls, it has to come from the mouth of God and that is His Word, the Bible.
This is why the Bible says in Deuteronomy 8:1-3 that "Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers. 2And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD".
